How much does an average Halloween costume cost?
Halloween is one of the biggest retail spending events of the year and prices for costumes can vary depending on what you're looking for.
SAN DIEGO – Halloween is America's most famous holiday, and it's even more frightening to spend on costumes and decorations on the most frightening day of the year.
Last minute shoppers are in for a treat when they look for costumes. Halloween is one of the biggest retail spending events of the year and prices for costumes can vary depending on what it is you're looking for.
"I think it's okay to spend a little," said one shopper.
The National Retail Federation estimates that in 2021, Halloween will cost customers $10.14 billion. The 2022 Halloween celebration is expected to set a new record for spending.
Part of the reason is people say they feel more comfortable celebrating again.
"It's been pretty quiet for the past few years with COVID, but this year, there's going to be a lot of fun," said Chris Martenson, who owns the Gypsy Treasure in La Mesa.
Costumes make up the largest part of the expenses. So, we decided to take a closer look at the average cost of clothing this year.
The House of Halloween is selling for $30 to $70 for adult costumes, and the average is around $50.
For children, the average price is $30, but the price could be anywhere from $20 to $40.
"I think a lot of it is because of licensing. If you see something that's, like, Universal, DC, or Marvel, it's got to, you know, let them sign their name on it, and it's expensive, "says Laura Romeo, who owns it.
Romeo says that even though the price is high, people aren't afraid to go all out, and they're serious about dressing up.
The House of Halloween runs from September to Halloween. Romeo said that 80 per cent of the company's income is normally generated during the final 4 days of the season.
Part of the reason why people like to spend money on clothes, she said, is that they can be used in a variety of ways.
"Do business with your friends, you know, you might have a special birthday party, and in January, you've got a really good staple, which somebody might know, you can take and use and turn it into your own," said Romeo.
La Mesa's Gypsy Treasure is open all year round. There, shoppers can either buy or rent costumes. The price of a dress for sale is about $40 on average.
"Some could be less, some could be more – depending on if you want to get more accessories, more elaborate," said Martenson.
The rent for the day varies from $45 to $150, and the average outfit is about $75.
"My rent is certainly high quality film quality," Martenson said.
It's not just humans this year. Pet clothing sales are expected to reach a few billion dollars.
If you're thinking of having a budget celebration, it's a good idea to create a handmade dress. You can also choose to create your own costumes from cheap items or things that you have in the neighborhood.
